Should I be using WordPress for my website?

What is WordPress?

WordPress started off as a blog system back in 2003 and was originally run by just 2 people.  As it grew, they developed a non-profit consortium around it to enable the the community to keep it alive and provide continual updates.  As it’s popularity grew, more people started adapting and modifying WordPress to start using it as a content management system.  As the benefits of a CMS became more obvious and popular, WordPress ultimately bi the bullet and nearly redeveloped the platform to perform theses tasks with ease and stability.  As word spread, it quickly gained marketshare and is widely considered to be the industry standard for Content Management Systems.

Should I use WordPress?

It isn’t for everyone, but it is the right choice for a large portion of the population.  Aside from Drupal, there isn’t many other CMS systems that run as quickly and efficiently as WordPress.  A word of caution though, WordPress can become very slow if inefficient and complex plugins are added to the site.  If you are in an industry such as the automotive industry, you may be surprised to know that a growing percentage of website providers are moving to a modified WordPress setup.  While this is a complex customization, I am impressed with how they are utilizing this popular system to revolutionize the industry!

Are there drawbacks to WordPress?

There are if you’re not careful and aware.  Because WordPress is so common, security of these websites is paramount.  Most people leave the settings at their default and don’t think twice about it.  You need to ensure you, or your website developer, NEVER do this.  it is not a matter of if, but when, your website will be hacked.  You don’t need to worry though if you follow best practices.  Find a reputable Managed WordPress Service (like us) and ensure they provide website security antivirus and daily backups as part of their service.  In addition, you need to be selective on the plugins you use on the site.  Loading too many plugins or inefficient can have a disastrous effect on your website’s load time.  Research the plugin, know what it does and know its reputation.  However, don’t just set up a plugin and leave it running, keep it updated and keep monitoring its performance.  A couple months before writing this article, we actually pulled support of a plug-in that we used to highly recommend to our clients.  In fact we actually recommended our clients remove the plugin and replace it with another because it was causing wide spread site load issues on a lot of our client’s websites.

WordPress is a great solution that we see using for many years into the future.  The need to maintain a solid approach to security and performance is crucial, but can easily be handled by those with limited experience or professional companies like ourselves.
